Subacute Labyrinthitis
- There is loss of normal T2 hyperintense signal of the endolymph and perilymph in labyrinthic structures.
- In the subacute phase of labyrinthitis there is fibrous replacement of the labyrinth which enhances on post gadolinium images.
- In the chronic phase there is ossific replacement (labyrinthitis ossificans) best seen on CT.
- The result is persistent sensorineural hearing loss.
- Fibrosis or ossification may prevent insertion of electrode for cochlear implantation.
