Marchiafava-Bignami Disease
- Primary degeneration of the corpus callosum associated with chronic alcohol consumption but occasionally seen in nonalcoholic patients.
- Patients present acutely with confusion, disorientation, neurocognitive deficits and seizures; in contrast, the chronic form is characterized by chronic dementia.
- The acute form affects the genu and splenium, whereas the chronic form most commonly affects the body.
- Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical findings in combination with imaging features.
